Typhoon Memorial
Typhoon Memorial on Majuro

Description

Standing quietly on Lagoon Road in Laura Village, the Typhoon Memorial marks one of the darkest moments in Marshallese history. A weathered sandstone marker commemorates the typhoon of 8 November 1918, which brought devastating tidal waves and fierce winds that claimed over 200 lives. The Japanese inscription, now barely legible through years of weathering, honours Emperor Taisho, who donated personal funds to help survivors rebuild. Understated and a little unkempt, it carries a melancholy weight that lingers long after you leave.

Highlights

  • Marks the deadliest storm in Marshallese history
  • Weathered Japanese inscription
  • Commemorates Emperor Taisho's post-typhoon rebuilding aid
  • Located in laid-back Laura Village, Majuro
